~ From Julia ~
Today is Canada Day and we woke up in Tribune Bay on Hornby Island, BC. It was sunny and delicious. A day which makes you want to be on or in the water. Nate and Coop got up and I made coffee while they blew up the inflatable island and the paddle board. When you look at Crow you are knocked out because it is such a beautiful wooden sailboat. You keep looking at this crew and notice the awnings fore and aft, the “one of a kind” Grasshopper, the pontoon boat that gets all kinds of looks and comments. On the port side of Crow you have the swim ladder attached, and just in front of the ladder is the island, then the paddle board and snuggled in between is the Sweetpea, Minto sailing dinghy. We have a lot of toys.
Brian arrived around noon. We had just eaten PB&J sandwiches. Brian has been all over this area, living in BC and boats being a part of his entire life. He says Tribune Bay is popular but the crowds seem less this year. Not sure why? Gas prices? Covid? Time at home in good weather? Having never been here before I thought it was pretty crowded and the sandy beach had lots of people and dogs. The tide was going out about mid day and some boats just pulled up as far as they could, spent the day on the beach then returned to their boats when the tide came back in. It was a friendly crowd. One family we enjoyed watching had an average size and good looking boat. It had the shape of a sailboat and the space of a small cabin boat. They had three children ages 10, 8 and 3. They brought kayaks and a SUP. I loved seeing the mom take off on the SUP with the 3 year old sitting in front of her totally relaxed. A sweet scene. Perhaps another version of Curve of Time.
A good friend Brian boated over from Comox to be with us. Brian became part of our family summer of 2016 when Coop and Nate met him on the R2AK. Brian is a special man with a huge heart and I look forward to meeting his family on our way back down. We had a mellow, wonderful day that included swimming, sailing Sweetpea, talking, stories, tunes, Julia found time to knit and we had laughs too. We had an eagle come to the rocky shoreline and get its dinner.
The wind picked up a lot this afternoon and we needed to move Crow to deeper water and reset our anchor as it was dragging. We could tell by looking at the caves along the shore and saw that we were moving… or could it be the caves were moving. Fortunately the wind did die down some. The crowd of boats had diminished. It looks to be a relaxed night. Coop’s making a pasta with meat sauce.
We had a nice evening of stories and hanging. I’m hoping for sweet dreams tonight. Chances are Nate will be able to post some fabulous photos of our day in Tribune Bay.
