Day 4 | The Joys of Staying | 6.26.22

~ From Julia ~

Four has always been my lucky number, so the fact that today was magical is no surprise to me. Each day on this adventure of a lifetime has been remarkable. The joy of being on the water and traveling to new places with my sons comes with much gratitude. First for being invited and second for being able to do this trip. The day began with hearing Coop awake and putting the kettle on for coffee. Nate and I were heading out shortly to Marty and Tina’s for coffee. Nate was filming a video of Marty and the story of his restoring Raven, a 1933 John Alden motorsailer. While Nate and Marty were talking Tina made me a cappuccino and showed me around the cabin. It was delicious and I mean the cappuccino and boat! Tina also shared her cedar weavings. She sent me off with materials to “play” with. We followed them out of the harbor and along Spieden Island. They were heading north and we hope to see them up north. Grasshopper is amazing for capturing the movement of a vessel in the water and Raven was ravishing!

Coop went to Roche Harbor to do some errands. Nate got some work done and I sat under the African Queen Awning journaling. I don’t know about you but if I don’t write frequently I find I don’t always recall the events and feelings of a day. In the afternoon the swim ladder was put on. It was the hottest day so far and the water was “take your breath away” cold but wonderful. I am starting to feel a freedom that I haven’t felt in some time and this is only day 4.

The later afternoon was highlighted by a swim in a pond! A real pond … the water was beautiful and clean. From there we went to our friend’s cabin with lush gardens of flowers and vegetables mixed together. The cabin has been her home for decades and upon arrival you are drawn in. The 4 of us gathered on her front deck porch. That led to our friend coming out with her guitar which led to singing, which led to her playing her violin as Nate played the guitar. It was so much fun. Our dinner was cooked in a fire pit carved into the stone above the water’s edge. We sat on the rocks warmed by the heat of the day. As the darkness arrived we gathered our dishes and walked back up to the cabin and said our many appreciations and hugged goodbye. Then the 3 of us were on our way through the dark woods holding hands. It was glorious. Grasshopper delivered us back to the Crow and once again it is a late night. It was a full and satisfying day. I wholeheartedly welcome Day 5. Goodnight from Reid Harbor, Stuart Island.
